On Word of God Sunday, the Holy Father encouraged everyone to read and reread a small passage of Scripture every day: ‘It will bring us the newness and joy of God.’
Pope Francis celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica for the fourth-annual Sunday of the Word of God, during which he, for the first time, formally conferred upon lay Catholics the ministries of lector and catechist.
COMMENTARY: One unambiguous success from the Second Vatican Council has been the deepening of devotion to sacred Scripture by Catholics in the pew.
For the sake of the country and our souls, Catholics must embrace Word of God Sunday (which falls on Jan. 24 this year) as an opportunity to dedicate our lives to discipleship of Jesus Christ and be led by him to transform the political order.
Pope Francis instituted the Sunday of the Word of God with the apostolic letter “Aperuit illis” on Sept. 30, 2019, the 1,600th anniversary of St. Jerome’s death.
