Martin Luther King’s Good Friday 60 Years Ago
COMMENTARY: 1963’s ‘Letter From Birmingham Jail,’ for all its legal and political significance, remains a profoundly religious text, a jailed pastor writing to fellow pastors.

COMMENTARY: Word on Fire’s publication of a volume containing the papal preacher’s Good Friday sermons from 1980-2022 is a tonic to strengthen one’s faith.
COMMENTARY: The Church first condemned the concepts behind this doctrine in a document written by Pope Paul III in 1537. So why is its repudiation still an issue today?
COMMENTARY: His public clash with Cardinal Seán O’Malley is an indication of how much the Holy Father’s reform agenda has faltered.
COMMENTARY: Contrary to the storyline pushed by papal courtier Austen Ivereigh and others, Pope Francis exercises authority in the manner of a Jesuit superior who, after hearing those he chooses to hear, makes his own decision.
COMMENTARY: The Church’s energy for the Holy Father’s overarching mission of charity has been absorbed over the last 10 years by fights over doctrine, morals and liturgy — and he has to share some of the responsibility for that.
COMMENTARY: In the 10 years of his papacy, Francis has taken about four trips per year, which is what Pope St. John Paul II averaged. In his journeys, he brings the tender compassion of God to all he meets.
COMMENTARY: During his reign as pope, the Holy Father has attracted a cast of characters quite unlike any recent pontificate. Who has come to define the Francis era?
COMMENTARY: These addresses and writings need to be brought out from the storehouse of treasures on Francis’ 10th anniversary, which the Catholic Church will mark March 13.
COMMENTARY: In forcing the hand of local bishops, Pope Francis has even undermined his own repeated calls for collegial and synodal administration.
