Jesuit Father Hans Zollner, an internationally renowned expert in protecting children and vulnerable adults from clerical sex abuse, has resigned from his position on the Vatican’s safeguarding commission.
Boston Cardinal Seán O’Malley is president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
In an audience at the Vatican on April 29, the Pope called on commission to produce annual audit to promote ‘transparency and accountability.’ In his speech, Francis underlined that ‘abuse in any form is unacceptable.’
The initiative is in response to Pope Francis’ 2016 invitation to bishops around the world to establish a day on which to pray for those subjected to sexual abuse.
The Holy Father urged leaders to put the welfare of victims ahead of seeking to defend the Church’s reputation.
Pope Francis has appointed Father Andrew Small to be the secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
In addition, seven members were also reconfirmed and nine new ones were appointed by Francis.

The abuse survivor’s resignation this month from the Vatican commission to protect minors has focused public attention on the issue.
