The bishops, citing possible threats to religious freedom as well as a likelihood that the amendment would be used to strike down pro-life laws and promote public funding for abortion, ask lawmakers to ‘prioritize meaningful solutions for women in need and for their children.’
According to the diocese, Bishop-elect Celino is the third Filipino to be elected a U.S. bishop.
‘It is obvious that Ratzinger … was a man of faith,’ says Bishop Robert Barron. ‘But it is perhaps equally important to point out that he was one of the great defenders of reason on world stage.’
Yet another a step into complete rejection of what the Church teaches about the truth and meaning of marriage by the nation’s second Catholic president.
Critics predict the measure, passed today by Congress, will be weaponized against groups that hold traditional views on marriage.
The bill, which would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and recognize same-sex marriages on a federal level, has drawn criticism from Catholic leaders for not providing strong enough protections for those who believe marriage is between one man and one woman — a belief in line with Church teaching.
This legislation, the bishops say, will empower women rather than enable the destruction of the unborn in abortion. The current version being considered in the Senate explicitly states in its text that the legislation would not require employer-sponsored health plans to pay for certain things — such as abortion.
The statement was issued on the 60th anniversary of ‘Nostra Aetate,’ the document of the Second Vatican Council which made clear the Church’s condemnation of hatred and violence against Judaism, beginning a new era of understanding and cooperation between the two faiths.
‘So much attention is given to the ceremony rather than to the vocation,’ Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco says, in discussing the need for accompanying couples embarking on the vocation of marriage.
