Bishop José Ornelas, representing the bishops’ conference, called the abuses ‘an open wound that hurts and embarrasses us.’
Ahead of the Nov. 8-11 bishops’ meeting, more than 200 Catholics sent a letter to the bishops’ conference calling for an independent investigation into clerical abuse.
The bill would apply to patients over 18 who are “in a situation of extreme suffering, with an untreatable injury or a fatal and incurable disease.”
If the bill is signed into law, Portugal will become the fourth country in Europe to legalize euthanasia, alongside the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
