In his reflection on Sunday’s Gospel, Pope Francis told the pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square during life’s most difficult moments ‘Jesus always looks at us with love.’
Pope Francis said we should also be aware of how the devil may try to use feelings of sadness or desolation to tempt us away from intentions to live with virtue.
The Pope recommended studying the lives of the saints to help recognize how God acts in a person’s life.

The Pope’s reflection was part of a weekly catechesis series on spiritual discernment that he launched on Aug. 31.
Speaking at his Wednesday general audience, the Pope underlined that the cross is ‘a sign of hope that does not disappoint because it is founded on the love of God, merciful and faithful.’
As part of discernment, the Pope encouraged people to reflect on their reactions to even small, unexpected circumstances, such as the surprise arrival of one’s mother-in-law.
The Pope said that a lifetime of patient waiting for God had sharpened Simeon and Anna’s spiritual senses.
Speaking about God’s tenderness and mercy, Pope Francis said that the “things of God always reach us through the mediation of human experiences.”
