17 bodies were recovered by rescue teams, including one infant, according to a statement by Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis.
He added an expression of closeness to Sister Luisa Dell’Orto’s family and to the Little Sisters of the Gospel of St. Charles de Foucauld.
Two hostages were released on Nov. 21. An additional three hostages were released on Dec. 6. The remaining 12 hostages escaped from their captors in mid-December.
The abductions come at a time of major political and economic crises for Haiti.
Haiti’s salvation may lie in the path the U.S. has most resisted — supporting Haitian civil society in charting a course out of chaos.
The hostages range in age from 8 months to 48 years. Of the 17 hostages, all but one are American citizens; the other is Canadian.
The missionaries were based in the town of Titanyen, and were returning from building an orphanage in Fond Parisien at the time of their kidnapping.
A top Holy See diplomat on Friday warned of “unbearable” security problems in the country.
