A state court halted the execution of Melissa Lucio over claims she was wrongfully convicted for the death of her child.

The court agreed to hear the case of John Henry Ramirez, who was scheduled to be executed, in its upcoming docket this fall.
Last summer, the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops had called the state’s denial of a chaplain for Gutierrez “an egregious rejection of the possibility of forgiveness and redemption while the state commits the violence of an execution.”
The effort comes after Rep. Adriano Espillat, D-N.Y., a Dominican-American and Catholic, introduced H.R. 97 Jan. 4, “To abolish the death penalty under Federal law.”
Purkey is the second federal prisoner to be executed this week, following the execution of Daniel Lewis Lee on Tuesday.
Bishop Estevez notes that no death row inmate in Florida has been granted clemency since 1983, and with 350 death row inmates, Florida has the largest active death row in the United States.
The Missouri Catholic Conference noted the morning of May 19 that Barton had already spent 26 years on death row, and is now confined to a wheelchair and has a severe neurological disorder due to a traumatic brain injury.
Capital-punishment opponents praised the decision, but critics accuse the state’s Supreme Court of judicial activism and Gov. Dannel Malloy of political duplicity.
